Vietnamese coffee + stunning Angkor Wat
These are two of the highlights to expect in this backpacker trip. If you are planning to go to Cambodia, then landing to Ho Chi Minh (SGN) is a smart thing to do. It's more affordable and you can have a two or more days to go around Saigon, which is a nice place as well.

Backpacking is an ideal thing to do, for it is easier to go around and transfer from one place. Southeast Asian countries are, for me, meant to be a backpack kind of traveling.

For coffee lovers, first thing to try in Ho Chi Minh (HCM) is the vietnamese coffee! It’s strong and unique (probably, one of the best coffee I have ever tried).
As you wander around HCM, you will see vendors selling food and different souvenirs which you can choose from. You can spot different hand-crafted local products around the area.

This tourist area lets you experience and takes you back to the era of the Vietnam War, from passing through a long underground passageways to eating their delicacies. You will also be amazed by the different traps used by the Vietnamese during that time and how they were able to survive such period. It's a must to visit this when going to HCM.
Reminder
Upon arrival in HCM, be sure to book first a bus going to Cambodia.
The bus trip is thirteen (13) hours long to Siem Reap, so be prepared for this.

Angkor Wat
The main attraction here is the world’s largest
religious monument, called Angkor Wat, which means “Temple City” in Khmer, their official
language. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Best time to see Angkor Wat is
during sunrise. Be there early because a lot of people will be there to see it
on the same time. But it is worth the early wakeup call when you see its majestic beauty.
Angkor Wat is just a part of the whole complex, so one day tour in this site can be exhausting. It is better to divide it into two-day tour so you can enjoy and appreciate more the different temples. If not permitted due to time restriction in your itinerary, you can just prioritize the most important and iconic ones like the Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple, Ta Prohm, and most especially the Angkor Wat. However, it is much better to go to every temple in this historical site if you really can, even if it seems too much, just go anyway, its part of the experience which you will bring along with you and the photographic memory which you will forever have.
